Snowmobile Accidents In Michigan Persist amid Enforcement Cut Backs

It is being reported by the Detroit Free Press that the number of snowmobile related accidents and deaths has increased in Michigan making it one of the most dangerous Great Lakes States when it comes to
snowmobiling.
Budget cuts and deficit woes continue to plague enforcement of the regulations that help maintain snowmobiling safety. Just this year nine fatalities have already occurred, while since 2005 130 people have lost their lives snowmobiling in Michigan. Additionally since 2005 29% of the crashes have resulted in part due to speed while approximately 18% of those accidents occurred due to alcohol.
While there is less enforcement out on the trails, Michigan also does not have any maximum speed limits. Essentially, it is important to remember that while snowmobiling is a big part of Michigan, it is also an activity that requires due care and respect for the conditions and the machines that we trust with our lives.
I've been out on the trails plenty this year, and while a vast majority of riders are careful and law abiding, it only takes a few seconds of carelessness for disaster to occur.
Next time you're out on your sled remember that even though thousands of people safely use their sleds each day in Michigan, that the utmost care is needed when embarking on the trials.
