Two Men Rescued From Boating Accident on Lake Michigan
Just two days ago, two men were pulled out of frigid Lake Michigan and back to safety. The two men were fishing out of Pastrick in Lake Michigan just North of Gary Light. This time of year can bring phenomenal multi-species fishing in the southern end of Lake Michigan including coho, kings, steelhead, and lake trout, but it's not worth your life!
Apparently the boat had capsized due to strong winds. While this weekend was mostly calm on the big water, the warm weather on Sunday also brought some strong winds and NOAA put out a small craft advisory to warn boaters of the dangerous conditions. The boat was a 16' open bow fishing vessel, and it was too small to be testing dangerous conditions. The surface temperature right now is in the low 40's and assuredly colder just a few feet down. Hypothermia can occur in under 5 minutes considering the extreme cold temperatures.
The two men were in the water for 15 minutes total. The boat did not have a VHF marine radio, which allows boaters to quickly contact the coast guard or other boaters for assistance. Luckily his cell phone was operational and was able to contact help. Please remember to have the proper safety equipment on board and don't take any excessive risks. The fish will still be there when the weather calms down.
