Dog Bite Costs Increase for Home Insurers

The Insurance Information Institute has stated that dog bites have cost home insurers in the United States an additional 6.4% compared to 2008.  The report also states that dog bites make up nearly 1/3 of all homeowners' insurance liability claims.  The real question here is where is this cost coming from?  Is it simply that dogs are becoming more aggressive resulting in more claims and worse injuries?  Do more people have dogs now than in the past?  Are the dogs not receiving the proper training and care?  Insurance companies in some states are now passing ordinances where insurance is required for certain breeds of dogs.  Jeffrey Nadrich, a personal injury lawyer in Las Angeles claims "We don't see more and more claims.  Insurance companies are excluding certain breeds from coverage and have become more limiting in their coverage."  Insurance companies increase premiums and/or exclude the pet from coverage if involved in a dog bite situation.  What a deal for the average American!!  You get no more additional coverage for your dog and home yet your premiums go up and you may not even be able to have coverage depending on the breed of the dog.  Not only this, but Insurance Companies are complaining about increases in cost to them.  So with the insurance companies tough stance on violent dogs, and no increase in the amount of cases resulting, how did the cost go up 6.4% in a year again?  The only logical answer must be an increase in health care costs.  This discussion will be for another day!
